Techne Goshawk Initial Watch Review

When it comes to watches under $300USD you usually end up in the quartz category.  But Techne has now introduced their new Goshawk automatic that manages to land well south of the $300USD mark with a great array of strap options and a Japanese movement.

Case & Dial

The case is a smaller size than what I am used to seeing at only 41mm.  A simple case design with nothing that stands out and allows your eyes to go directly to the very attractive dial.  A modern aviation style design with large numbers and a 24 hour dial off to the left.  The hand of the 24 hour dial spans the entire diameter with the first half in orange and the back in grey.  It really brings a breakout to the dial that fits the entire design.

Tritec NewLite covers all the hours, and hands and the 24 hour hand is the only section that differs in orange.  The date window is strategically placed between 4 and 5 which allows it to not have to steal the 3 as I am used to seeing.

Movement & Case Back

The Goshawk is powered by the Miyota 8217 which allows it to have all these extra features and keep the cost down.  Exposed by an open case back you can see it is Geneva striped and has a cutout rotor so you always have a view of the entire movement.  Around the edge of the case back each piece is numbered and branded as well.

Band

Techne has a vast array of options for all their watches from NATO style to leather.  This particular model you have the option of a khaki canvas, and its a well thought-out band.  On the front the adjustment holes are doubled with leather and the backing is completely leather.  You also get the added option of a deployment clasp which I always opt for.

Overall

The Techne Goshawk is an outstanding value that you can pick up for only $240USD.  With all the options and one of a kind dial you can setup this watch just the way you like.  As always I will give it two weeks before I come back with some final thoughts.  In the mean time ask any questions below in the COMMENTS or YouTube.

How long did it take once you placed the order and where did it ship from? I'm excited to order mine!

They ship from Switzerland within a day. Depending on the speed it will take a week of two.

Best regards,

Just ordered one today. I got it with the overcoat strap. Nice to see that everyone who has one enjoys it.

This may seem a silly question, but...can the 24hr dial be set separately or does it have to reflect the same time as the 12hr hand?
It seems in all the pictures I've seen the two dials are showing the same time. I'm not quit sure what the point of having the two dials is for if they just display the same time.

Thanks,
C.

The 24 hour dial reflects the same time as the main time. So it its 1 AM it will read 1, and if it is 1PM it will read 13. Good concept though. Have you ever thought about a GMT watch?

The purpose of the 24 hour sub dial is not to serve as a GMT function but to indicate AM or PM. If you are in a dark environment with a standard 12 hour watch for an extended period of time, it becomes hard to determine day from night. The 24 hour indicator takes the guesswork out of figuring out if it is AM or PM. I guess it work even work in environments were it is light for extended periods of time (think Northern Alaska in the summer).

Ken

Thanks, makes sense now.
Wasn't totally intuitive to me sense I've never been in a situation when my internal clock was off by 12hrs.
I love the look,... was on the fence in regards to it seeming gimicky to me but I like the idea of it being used as an a.m./p.m. indicator.
Also, I dig how the hands seem to disappear towards the center of the dial.

Received mine today. I have to say I love it. I got the one with the overcoat strap. My rotor was upgraded to the Primus rotor and I received an additional strap. What a great company to do business with. The serial number is 007.

Anybody know a source for the now discontinued Techne Sparrow Hawk model? Any internet vendors still have stock?
